I grew up in a small town in a house that was never locked (didn't even have a key) and now, just a few decades later, that sleepy safe town is famous for it's rash of breaking-and-entering-with-intent-to-kill. Not once, not twice, but at latest count four times within a five-mile radius, read it. And my town isn't an isolated anomoly; it's joining the ranks of the big cities in crime statistics along with dozens of other small towns just like it.
